During Your Visit

A visit includes much more than a cleaning. Regular appointments help us detect and prevent larger mouth issues, before they become overwhelming. We offer personalized care, and so we take time to visit with you about any concerns, questions, pain, or changes in your mouth.

There are a few things you can expect to happen during a regular appointment with Dr. Marea White.

Digital Images

Our friendly and professional dental hygienist, Laurie or her assistant Amanda may take digital images of your whole mouth. This allows us to see things beneath the surface like inflammation around your roots or tiny fractures in a tooth. Xrays help if to see if there is any bone loss in additional to determining if there are cavities.

Depending on your situation, we may take digital images once a year or every couple months. For an average patient with a healthy mouth, you can expect to have them taken once a year.

Dental Exam

Before your cleaning, we perform a complete dental exam, taking a close look at every single tooth and the surrounding gum area. We use a small mirror to check around your teeth. We are checking for things like gum disease, oral cancer, and any decay.

We perform a complete periodontal (gum) exam to determine the type of cleaning (making sure there is no infection or gum disease). We look for areas that may be more sensitive or may be bleeding.

We take note of any discoloration or any new changes in your mouth or teeth.

We take time to ask questions and listen to hear if there are any teeth that are sensitive to temperature changes. We may tap on those teeth or apply gentle pressure to note your response.

Are you experiencing lock-jaw or TMJ? Have your teeth been shifting with age? We want to make sure that everything is okay in your mouth before proceeding with a cleaning.

A Thorough Cleaning

During your cleaning, we use a small mirror and scaler to get rid of plaque and tartar from your teeth and gumline. We scrape gently between your teeth and around your gums to remove any buildup, as this is what leads to gum disease.

The more you brush and floss regularly, the less plaque and tartar will need to be scraped off.

After the tartar is removed, we use a a high-powered electric toothbrush to polish every tooth, front and back. We polish with a prophy jet (air, water, and a purified baking soda), or we can polish with the toothpaste. We have a few flavors of toothpaste to choose from. Once complete, you can rinse out your mouth right from your chair.

We end the cleaning, with expert flossing. We try to carefully get deep in between your teeth and gums and remove any excess plaque or toothpaste. After flossing, we apply a fluoride varnish (that comes in various flavors) which strengthens the teeth to help prevent decay (especially to protect around crowns and bridges to protect investment).
